It took 52 small tench before I hit into a decent elastic stretcher, the first decent fish being a 3-pounder that led me a merry dance before I netted it including diving in the lillies twice. It is a balance fishing this lake between fishing light enough to attract bites but heavy enough to control the bigger tench.

  • I fed three swims one at 13-metres in just under 4 ft. of water, another at 5-metres in a similar depth and another jset next to some bankside lillies.
  • All the early action came from very small temch, a handful coming from the 5-metre line on chopped worm over caster, but I made more bites and fish from the 13-metre swim either on chopped worm or soft pellet over micro pellet.

  • The white Daiwa Hydrolastic is soft enough not to bump the small tench when using the obligatory barbless hooks but give you a fighting chance of landing the bigger fish. That said with this 3-pounder running me around I would consider stepping up to grey hydro in case I encouter a bigger lump.
  • regular feeding using this Fox Tosspot was a key aspect to maintaining bites. Initial feeding was via a bigger dedicated cupping kit but each time I shipped out this pot was filled. On the 13-metre line it was micro pellets plus a few 4 mm soft hooker samples while at 5-metres it was filled with chopped worm and caster.
  • Every now and then I'd top up either line with a bigger pot of feed.
  • I kept trying the shorter line but just like the margins it was largely unproductive.
  • Only the occasional very small tench showed up on the 5-metre line.
  • The elastic stretchers were all at 13-metres and as the session went on more opf the fish were in the 1-2 lb-plus bracket.
  • These tench are great fun on balanced tackle.
  • I was using 0.14 mm diameter rig line tied loop to loop to a 0.12 mm diameter trace with a spade end Tubertini size 18 Series 808 hook, this withstood some serious pulling on the bigger 3 lb stamp fish.
  • Fishery consultant Andrew Ellis was bang on when he said you would have to feed off the smaller fish before the bigger ones arrived.
  • The last two hours of the session produced the bigger fish.
  • Another elastic stretcher.
  • A typical small tench is sung to hand.
  • I would certainly give this lake the thumbs up approval.
  • A view across the Sunset Lake at Lemington Lakes. there are lilies running up the middle of the lake as well as in the margins, this is a perfect tench haven.

  • Another tinca in the pan.
  • One of the bigger fish from my session, sadly I didn't hit any of the big fish but there's always next time!
