  • My first visit to the recently opened Nether Stowey Lakes. Only Lake one of the two is currently open and is socked with lots of small carp, the biggest being around 8 lb. There are roach and skimmers too. On a wet and windy July afternoon I arrived at the 22-peg lake to find a couple of anglers fishing at the windward end of the lake, while another pair were setting up at the opposite end. I chose a swim midway along one of the long banks becasue it was on a point. Mind you thye coloured water clearly showed that the stockies were feeding well. So I decided to fish short with a top kit and two sections on this put me at the bottomof the near slope in about 3 ft. 6 in. of water. © 2009 Brian Gay
  • Starting on paste I had a couple of 2 lb commons straight away but then suffered a lot of 'iffy bites from smaller carp messing with the paste. In this situation pellet proves more effective and a change to a soft 4 mm Ringer pellet soon had me getting a bite and a fish most chucks. © 2009 Brian Gay
  • From a conservation point of view I think netting small carp is important it doesn't take long. © 2009 Brian Gay

  • I had to use my Korum Specimen spoon for the catch shot, I hadn't counted the total numbers of fish, although in several test half hour spells my pal Slim who was watching reckoned I was putting around 20 lb in the net. In the end there was around 100 lb of fish in the net. © 2009 Brian Gay
  • I had to use my Korum Specimen spoon for the catch shot, I hadn't counted the total numbers of fish, although in several test half hour spells my pal Slim who was watching reckoned I was putting around 15-20 lb in the net. In the end there was around 100 lb of fish in the net. I caught mostly on soft pellet at full depth while I also had fish shallow and on the paste and some on corn. Oh and I also had a few skimmers and roach in another net. Some lads fishing floating bread had a couple of 5-pounders and another guy fishing at the windy end of the lake netted an 8-pounder just as I was leaving. I didn't get among the bigger fish but from a match angler's perspective this could be a very busy water for small club matches and knock-ups. The second lake is due to open next year and will double the available peg count. © 2009 Brian Gay
